First Week of College Cross Country

Hi everyone! Sorry I have missed so many blog posts; I’ve been busy with moving into college and cross country practice. I’m a sophomore this year and I want to share what the first week of collegiate cross country looks like. This post is based on my division III cross country team.


Monday-Day 1:

Monday was move in day. I got another single room for this year and I’m very excited about it. When I first walked in it looked super small but now it feels cozy and I have room for everything. After moving in to my dorm in the morning I met my team for lunch in the campus dining hall and then we had a meeting to go to. After that we went for a short run and then went to my coach’s house for a team cookout. After the cookout I put up more decorations in my dorm room. It was a great first day!

My Packing List for College

Hi everyone! I have been busy getting everything ready for move in (which is actually tomorrow) and I wanted to share my packing list for college!  Last summer I was busy trying to find things for my dorm room. I kept searching and searching different blogs and pins on pinterest to try to make sure that I had everything that I would need.   1. If you know you will be home before it starts getting colder, don’t pack all of your clothes. This frees up some space when taking everything to college and it frees up space in your dorm room.
  2. Keep any clothes in you closet at home on their hangers. Take a garbage pack and put it around the clothes (so just the hangers are visible at the top) so its easier to put away in your dorm room.
  3. Print out inspiration quotes and tape them to your walls. This is an inexpensive way to make your room feel more like home and can help improve your mood during the school year!
  4. If you don’t have a lot of clothes to hang up in your closet, buy hanging t-shirt or shoe organizers and put them in your closet. Its a great way to use up the extra storage in your closet.
  5. Pack your items in laundry baskets from home, this makes it easier to carry everything up to your dorm room.
  6. Don’t worry about organizing your whole dorm on move-in day. Move-in day can be stressful and you have plenty of time to organize/decorate your room in the days after move-in.

Going on a Disney Vacation on a College Student’s Budget

Happy Friday everyone! You may have noticed that I missed a few blog posts this weeks and that’s because I’ve been a little busy…planning a trip to Disney World with one of my friends!! 🙂  I’m very excited to go and we just booked our room and tickets yesterday so now I have more time for blogging. 🙂

I’ve always wanted to go on a Disney trip with one of my friends but I always thought that it would be too expensive. I was surprised to see that it wouldn’t cost as much as I thought. So I decided to start a series of posts on tips and ideas for planning a vacation to Disney on a college student’s budget.


Length of vacation:

I would recommend staying 6 days/5 nights in Disney World. This way you have a day for each park and then you won’t have to rush to a park on your first for last day in Disney. You would also have time to visit Disney Springs, swim, and maybe even walk around a few of the other Disney Resorts. However, staying 5 days/4 nights is also a great option. You would still have 1 day for each park and 1 day for Disney Springs. If you get an early flight going to Disney and a late flight coming back this is a great length for your vacation.


When to visit:

Visting Disney World in January is a great option for college students. Typically winter break is from late December to late January for college students so going to Disney World the first full week in January (sometime after New Year’s) is great. After New Year’s its the low season at Disney. This means less people visiting the parks and cheaper rooms.

If you can’t visit in January, fall is also a great time to visit. Its not too busy and rooms are still pretty cheap. Only visit in fall if you have a longer fall break so you don’t have to miss any school. Disney usually offers the dining plan for free during the fall so you could possible get your meals for the trip for free!

The next time I would suggest is summer. The rooms will cost more and the parks will be busier but you will get more time in the parks because they are open later in summer. I actually love visiting Disney World in June. If you get done with school early, then sometime in May would be a good time to visit Disney as it won’t be as busy in June when most schools have summer vacation.

I would recommend staying Monday-Friday for a 5 day trip or Sunday-Friday / Monday-Saturday for a 6 day trip as it is cheaper to stay for week days.



If you are not too far from Disney and you can drive then driving is a great option for you. However, if you’re pretty far from Disney then you should fly. I have always used Southwest for flying and highly recommend them. They have reasonable prices, nonstop flights, and two free checked bags. Try to get an early flight there and a late flight back home so you can maximize your vacation time.



I will assume that most college students are between the ages of 18-24 years old. It may be possible to get a car rental if you’re 21 or over but you will be charged more for being under 25 years old. That’s why I recommend staying on Disney property and not getting a rental car. Disney has the magical express which picks you up and drops you off at the airport. This way you don’t have to worry about getting to and from the airport. There are also complimentary buses throughout Disney World for Disney resort guests to take to the parks.

The cheapest hotels on Disney property are the All Star hotels. I will personally be staying at the All-Star Movie Resort. The hotel room doesn’t matter too much because most of your time will be spend away from the room and inside the Disney parks!



Disney offers a quick service dining plan but I suggest looking at the restaurant menus before you go and seeing how much you will be spending on food. Then buy a gift card and load a little extra money above what you think you’re going to spend on food. Then you can just swipe your gift card for food and use any extra money for souvenirs. The dining plan is convenient though so if you don’t want to deal with paying with money or gift cars for food the dining plan could be for you. You should also budget for one character meal to get the experience of meeting the characters and eat in a nice restaurant. I’ve never eaten at a character meal before and I’m excited to do that during my upcoming trip.

A way to save money is to pack breakfast food (like bagels or peanut butter sandwiches) and eat it in your hotel room. There are also grocery services that can deliver to your Disney Hotel (such as the if you want to save even more money and pack lunches/dinners.


Disney Park Tickets:

I think the regular 4 day Magic Your Way (one park per day) Disney tickets would work for a 5 to 6 day vacation. You can add the Park Hopper pass (for around $70) to visit more than one park a day. However, in January the parks aren’t open as long as they are during other times of the year so doing one park a day would be fine since there may not be time to visit another park after you are done with your first park of the day.



I think the amount to budget for souvenirs is completely up to you. Disney has the Shop Disney Parks app where you can look through the different souvenirs and see how much it will cost you for the souvenirs you like. For a 5 to 6 day vacation in Disney World I would budget anywhere from  $150-$400 for souvenirs, depending on how much you want to spend.



I’m going to share the cost for a sample Disney vacation in January for 2 people with a few different options so you can see approximately how much it will cost for a Disney vacation.


Monday January 16th- Friday January 20th 2017

Plane tickets- estimating $275/person  round trip (depends on where you’re flying from)

Room at one of the All Star Resorts- $420.36 ($210. 18/person)

Disney 4 day Magic Your Way tickets- $695.02 ($347.51/person)

Food – ($110/person) (packing breakfast and lunch, eating dinner in the parks, one character meal, bringing own water bottle so you don’t pay for any drinks in the parks, and 1-2 snacks per day in the Disney parks)




Total: approximately $945 plus souvenir money


As you can see, it is possible to go on a 5 day Disney vacation for under $1,000.

Surviving Summer Running

Happy Friday everyone! Even though it is already August (crazy!), I want to share my tips and favorite items that help me beat the heat of running during the summer.


My first tip for summer running is to run early in the morning. It is much cooler in the morning compared to the evening. This can help you so you’re not running when its really hot and the sun is beating down on you. If you can’t run early in the morning I have my favorite items listed below that help me in the heat.


Water Bottle: CamelBak Chute 1L 

This is my favorite water bottle to use throughout the day. I like that it has the spout cap rather than a straw-like cap of some of the other bottles. The spout cap also allows you to drink water faster which can help you stay hydrated.


Running Water Bottle: Nathan QuickShot Plus

I love the water bottle, especially for summer running! It is very easy to run with and it holds 10 oz of water. I take this on almost all of my runs throughout the summer. I also like to squirt some of the water on my head which keeps me cool while I’m running.


Running Shoes: New Balance 880v5 shoes

I love my New Balance running shoes. They have a little bit of a cushion which feels great for running. They aren’t specifically for summer running just running in general and I love them! 

Recovery drink: Nuun in triple berry 

After long runs of around 60mins and up I like to drink a glass of water with triple berry nuuns. I like how the nuuns help my electrolyte levels and triple berry is a great flavor!

Sunscreen: Banana Boat Spray on Sport Sunscreen SPF 50

I always put on sunscreen before running in the summer and this is my favorite sunscreen. I like using spray on before my runs because it’s much faster than using lotion sunscreen. This sunscreen is specially designed for sports/being active which is a plus. 

Extras: a running hat and sun glasses may be helpful for running when it’s very sunny.

Friday Favorites: Hollywood Studios 

Happy Friday! Its been a few weeks since I did a Disney Friday Favorites post so I decided today to talk about Hollywood Studios!

I really love Hollywood Studios and all of the great rides and shows. I went on Rockin’ Roller Coaster for the first time last winter and it was pretty fun! I still haven’t gone on Tower of Terror yet because I’ve been too scared but I am determined to go on it next time I visit Disney World!


Favorite ride: Toy Story Midway Mania and The Great Movie Ride 

I love playing the 3D midway games at Toy Story Midway Mania; it reminds me of Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin! Its also so much fun to play against another person! The Great Movie Ride is my other favorite in Hollywood Studios.


Favorite entertainment/show: Indiana Jones and Fantasmic

I had to pick two favorites for this category too. I love the Indiana Jones stunt show; it is one of the shows that I can’t miss while I’m in Hollywood Studios. Fantasmic is just an amazing show with all the characters, lights, and fireworks!



Favorite restaurant: Backlot Express

I have eaten at Backlot Express a few times before and I have really enjoyed my food every time!


Favorite dessert shop: Sweet Spells

I love getting the huge chocolate chip Mickey cookies!


Favorite gift shop: Once Upon a Time

I love all the gift shops on Sunset Boulevard but I think Once Upon a Time is my favorite store! It has so many different types of souvenirs. Side note-I also love the TV show Once Upon a Time!

What to Expect from Joining Cross Country

When I was a freshmen entering high school, I knew I loved running and that I wanted to join the cross country team.  I was really nervous to join the team though!  I didn’t know what to expect of anything-the meets, the team, and the practices.  I wanted to make a post for girls who are thinking about joining cross country, so you know what to expect.


For me, practice started during the last two weeks of summer.  The practices lasted around 2 hours in the morning. We would do our warm up, run, stretch, and then possibly abs/weight lifting/leave early. Once school started our practices switched to after school.


The Team:

Cross country teams are typically smaller teams which allows for a family atmosphere.  I loved cross country in high school, my teammates and I were so close and I made many friends! 

Cross country is  a great way to make friends especially when you’re starting high school because practice usually starts in August before school starts. You then would be able to make friends before even starting high school.



Most of our meets were an hour bus ride or less away from my high school. We would get to the meets around 2 hours before the first race which gave us plenty of time to warm up and see the course before the race. Races typically are during the mid morning so around 9 or 10am. There are usually 4 races: one varsity and one junior varsity race for boys and one varsity and one junior varsity for girls. The meets aren’t too long; if we left around 7:00am we would usually be back by the early afternoon. 

Team bonding:

My cross country team had many team bonding activities where we got together and had fun as a team.  The most popular team bonding activity that we did was going to pasta parties. We would go to one of my teammate’s house and have pasta and talk the evening before our race. I have also gone on camping trips and have had movie nights with my team mates. 

Running cross country was one of the highlights of my high school experience.  I loved it so much and made so many great friends and memories! If you enjoy running I would highly recommend looking into running cross country in high school. 🙂

Meals to Make in College Dorms

Hi everyone! College move in is approaching quickly and I wanted to share some meal ideas that can be made in a dorm room; some ideas may need use of a residence hall kitchen.

These meals can be made using my healthy grocery list for college students.


  • Whole grain cereal with milk
    • you can add fruit and nut butter to create a full meal
  • Overnight oats
  • Sprouted grain bread/english muffins with peanut butter and fruit on the side
  • Avocado toast
  • Buckwheat/whole wheat waffles
    • bring a waffle maker with you can you can make waffles in your dorm or residence hall kitchen
  • Fruit smoothie
    • frozen fruit, greek yogurt, and milk
  • Egg white and veggie omelette with toast (would need use of a residence hall kitchen)



  • Wrap or sandwich
    • whole grain wrap/bread with deli meat, veggies, and hummus (as the dressing)
  • Peanut butter banana wrap with greek yogurt on the side
  • English muffin pizzas with veggies
  • Rotisserie chicken with brown rice and veggies
  • Sweet potato with veggies
  • Nut butter sandwich with greek yogurt and fruit
  • English muffins with hummus and veggies
